Homelessness, inland port, air quality highlight first major Salt Lake City mayoral debate

SALT LAKE CITY — At times exchanging snarky, but good-natured jabs at one another and periodically drawing laughs or applause from the audience, the first major Salt Lake City mayoral debate Wednesday night put candidates through their paces on issues ranging from homelessness and housing to air quality and the inland port.

Seven out of eight candidates showed for Wednesday night’s debate, hosted by the Alliance for a Better Utah, a left-leaning governmental advocacy group, at the Salt Lake City Main Library, all vying to prove they’d be the best choice to replace Salt Lake City Mayor Jackie Biskupski when she steps down at the end of the year.

Mackenzie Lueck Was Texting While At Salt Lake City Airport

SALT LAKE CITY, UT — Mackenzie Lueck, the missing University of Utah student, was texting with someone while at Salt Lake City International Airport on Monday, June 17 when she was last heard from.

Police had previously said that Lueck texted her mother at 2:01 a.m. On Wednesday, Salt Lake City police told Patch via email that Lueck was texting with someone else and police have been in contact with that person. Police did not provide any further information.

Salt Lake City business briefly evacuated due to ammonia leak

SALT LAKE CITY – A business was briefly evacuated early Wednesday morning due to the odor of ammonia.

Fire crews responded to Nicolas and Company near 5500 West Harold Gatty Drive in Salt Lake City at 12:45 a.m.

The people inside the business had already self-evacuated after smelling ammonia, which is often used for refrigeration in large warehouses.

Hazmat crews entered the building to shut off the main ammonia valve. No measurable levels of ammonia were detected in the building after the leak.

No injuries were reported.
